OMSB exam: Oman licence requirements and application
Check your degree or diploma and the licence route before you book. An OMSB pass alone does not let you work in Oman.
Facts last verified 5 October 2026. Updated 6 October 2026.
Check your exam and licence route
The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) sets the exams used for licences (exam catalogue). Your degree or diploma decides which paper you can sit. Ministry of Health (MOH) licence steps include documents, your employer and any oral exam.
| Paper | Qualification |
|---|---|
| OEGP: general practitioner | Recognised medicine bachelor’s degree and completed approved or accredited internship. (booklet). |
| OEGD: general dentist | The booklet does not list degree or internship entry requirements. Confirm eligibility with OMSB before paying. |
| OEP: pharmacist | Recognised bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. (booklet). |
| OEN: BSN nurse | Recognised bachelor’s degree in nursing. (booklet). |
| OEN: diploma nurse | Recognised diploma in nursing science. (booklet). |
We did not find an official OMSB exemption list for overseas or other Gulf licences. Ask OMSB before relying on another licence.
Prepare your documents
If you trained outside Oman, DataFlow must check your documents. DataFlow checks your papers with the places that issued them. This applies to Omanis and non-Omanis (OMSB checklist). Prepare your degrees or diplomas, experience letters, professional licence, passport and CV. The checklist gives no separate lists for each profession.
For private-sector nursing, also prepare your higher-secondary certificate, nursing transcript and police clearance certificate (nursing SOP, pages 6–7). The SOP lists nursing council registration as optional.
To register with MOH, prepare your degrees or diplomas, transcripts, experience letters and earlier registrations or licences. Translate documents outside Arabic or English (MOH service).
Finish DataFlow and the equivalence check
The OMSB page gives up to 25 working days for DataFlow. Its linked FAQ gives 35 working days after you pay. Neither explains the gap. We suggest you plan for the longer time.
Holidays, staff absences and archived or lost records can slow checks (DataFlow FAQ). If you have a report, you can move it to OMSB. Transfers take 5 days when no extra documents need checking (DataFlow service).
After DataFlow, your employer sends the separate OMSB equivalence request. OMSB checks if your degree or diploma meets Oman’s standard. This can take 1 to 3 months (OMSB process). A DataFlow report alone does not mean you meet the rules.
Register with MOH
You can apply from inside or outside Oman. MOH covers public and private medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied professions. Registration is free (MOH service). MOH aims to finish in 5 business days once your file is complete (MOH target). It can return an incomplete file up to 3 times (MOH return rules).
You can start MOH registration without an employer. For private-sector nurses, the employer must apply. You still need the licence before you work.
Finish your profession’s licence steps
| Route | Next step |
|---|---|
| Doctor | Apply for the medical staff licence. Prepare a DataFlow certificate, ID, insurance and valid CPR documents. |
| Private-sector nurse | Experience: at least 4 years with a diploma, or 3 with a bachelor’s. Bring employer documents, DataFlow and Pearson VUE or another approved test (nursing SOP). |
| Pharmacist | At least 3 years of verified experience; work gap no more than 1 year. For Drug Safety Center applications, the exam certificate must be under 1 year old (Apply for Exam). |
| Pharmacist oral assessment | Pass the Drug Safety Center VIVA before licensing (licence service). |
The Drug Safety Center still asks for a “Prometric” certificate. Ask if it accepts your Pearson VUE OMSB result (Apply for Exam).
For private-sector nursing, your employer applies first. Then come payment, entry visa, interview or viva, approval, labour card and licence issue (nursing SOP). To change a nursing licence, file the request by hand with the Directorate General of Private Health Establishments (DGPHE).
Arrange your work visa
Your employer asks for the work visa, normally after labour permission (visa service). The visa job title must match the work permit. For medical jobs, the police also need approval from the relevant body (police checklist).
You need a fitness certificate for the resident card. The police also ask people from listed countries for an attested medical certificate. You can work when the licence is issued. Private-sector nurses also need the labour card.
Use OMSB fees and booking to plan costs and book your paper. Then check OMSB results for your report and retakes.
